American Idol has been what I would call a phenomenon. What was once a talent show, has turned into a world renown show that begs for people to not only to show what they have, but also what they don't have. I have found myself countless times, watching this show and until just recently, I have been very interested in seeing it pull out greater talent. Anyway, after David Cook won this year I was astounded at the number of people that voted; 93 million... think about that. That is a lot of people. American idol is truly one of the most popular shows on the face of the planet.
So I began to think as I usually do... has American Idol become one of America's Idols? Now I don't ask that question to come across all "spiritual" but I had to ask it. It is so funny how every Wednesday and Thursday night I could count on absolutely zero of my friends being available because they were all watching the show. It was interesting to here people argue at why their guy or girl was better. It truly has become an idol. Now for most of us, it isn't that big of a deal who wins or not, but for many, it is all at that time that matters. I was reading today in Psalm 135:15-18 which says, "The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men's hands. They have mouths, but they do not speak; eyes they have, but do not see; they have ears, but do not hear; nor is there any breath in their mouths. Those who make them are like them; so is everyone who trusts in them." It is easy to bypass this verse thinking, "ah nobody makes statues anymore to worship them." But if you take a hard look at what we worship, it would probably scare us. I don't know about you, but I want to worship something that lasts. American idols come and go, but our God lasts forever. I don't want to be caught consumed with some show, but consumed with the eternal everlasting God of the universe who cares and loves each one of us. Let Him be your idol. Psalm 135:13 "Your name, O Lord, endures forever, Your fame, O Lord, throughout all generations."
Here me out, American idol is not an idol, but it is what we make it. What is it to you?
